It was just an ordinary Friday morning.
The sounds of Third Eye Blind filled the car
as the crisp, autumn air whipped
multicolored leaves
past the glaring red light
that my brother and I were stopped at on our way to school.
As we waited for the traffic light to change,
my thoughts drifted to
my biology assignment and
the big, high school football game later that night.
It was just an ordinary Friday morning,
when suddenly,
everything changed.
Out of nowhere, I was thrown out of my seat
into the windshield
sending small pieces of shimmering glass everywhere.
Shockwaves of fear swept over my body
as I tried to process what had happened.
My vision was blurry,
my mind was dizzy,
and my entire body hurt.
My thoughts were broken
at the sound of my brother crying.
I painfully turned my head in his direction,
and the image that greeted me is imprinted in my mind forever.
I saw my beloved brother smashed into the steering wheel
with blood running down his face.
I started to cry.
I had never been so scared in my entire life.
Were we going to die?
It was just an ordinary Friday morning,
how had this happened?
The faint sound of sirens could be heard off in the distance.
At this moment, I realized that we were going to be ok.
As I waited for help to arrive,
I promised myself to live each day to the fullest.
Because, this tragic event taught me that even
an ordinary Friday morning
might be your last.
